Second Harvest Heartland
Each fall SOND invites students
to Second Harvest Heartland to volunteer and pack food that will go to our hungry
neighbors. Second Harvest Heartland is a food bank that distributes
food to local food shelves, soup kitchens, homeless shelters, senior community
centers and children’s after school programs. Their mission is to simply end
hunger, and their goal is not to just feed a family for a day, but help them
get the resources so they are not hungry tomorrow. SOND also holds an Annual Food
Drive each year around the holiday season. This past year SOND donated over 30
pounds of food for our food drive which goes towards the 50 million (and more) pounds
of food Second Harvest distributes annually.
Looking
to do more than just pack food? Second Harvest offers unique experiences for students
and those who are interested in their mission to fight hunger. Check their
website out for more information. Any questions about the opportunities or the kinds
of experiences Second Harvest has to offer? SOND’s president, Lorrie, has
interned with them and has volunteered over 100 hours. Contact Lorrie at boule009@umn.edu and visit http://www.2harvest.org.
